Today, a stunning 40 percent of America’s 4th graders continue to read below the basic level on national reading assessments. With crowded classrooms and structured teaching curriculum, children have little one on one time to practice reading skills with their teachers.
The RSVP volunteers provide that special attention and gift of their time for children to read one on one to practice and improve their reading skills. The volunteers are assistants, teachers, mentors and sometimes grandmas to the children in pa
rticipating classes at Beadle, Lincoln, Stewart, and Webster schools. The students look forward to their special time to read with the volunteers. Our volunteers contributed 981 hours last year toward this crucial time for the young students allowing them to become comfortable and confidant with their reading skills.
Volunteers also promote the joy of reading by reading stories to children at Headstart, reading to children at the Summer Lunch Program activities, reading with Mrs. Santa, and providing reading outreach for the Yankton Library to the local day care centers.
