The Big Red Bookshelf places red bookshelves within the community filled with gently used or new books appropriate for children from birth to 5th grade. These books have been donated by local businesses, nonprofit agencies, or community members. Children are encouraged to take a book home with them to keep and share!

Or if you're an individual or family, bring your gently used or new CHILDREN’s books, appropriate for children ages birth to 5th grade, to our drop off location:

United Way & Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton - 610 W 23rd Street, Suite 11

Our goals are to increase book ownership by families, encourage parent-child interactions with books, involve community members in this literacy effort through book donations, and to keep books circulating within the community.

Book ownership is important in fostering an interest in reading and a love for books. If parents are to read to their children, they need the books to do so. Children feel pride in owning their own books and develop confidence in reading when books are easily within reach and can be read again and again.
