December 2004 - Dorothy Bohlmann

Dorothy Bohlmann is constantly searching for "singles" in the area.  Singling out other singles in the community has been her goal for the past seven years when planning the "Social Singles" activities.  The events may be a dance, a party, a tour, a sports event - either participatory or spectator, serving the Banquet or helping with the Community Holiday Feast.  Being the primary organizer for "Social Singles" is only one of the reasons that Bohlmann is the recipient of the 2004 December Volunteer of the Month Award.

Bohlmann has also volunteered as a facilitator for the Divorced, Separated and Widowed Support Group for the past four years.  Beginning Experience also relies on Bohlmann's leadership for the weekend retreats for people that are ready to move on with their lives.  The retreats occur three to four times a year attended by approximately 25 people.  With a fifteen-member team participating at each retreat, it takes dedicated volunteers to make these events successful.  The team members share their personal life, lead small group discussions and guide other singles through the 1-1Ú2 day activities.  Dorothy Bohlmann is currently organizing a Singles Bible study group.

Other volunteer-driven organizations that benefit from Bohlmann's experiences are Al-Anon (adult), Al-A-Teen (12-19) and Al-A-Kid (8-11).  She has served in the various leadership roles as well as attending meetings, coordinating the meetings of an Al-A-Teen group and contributing support in the 12-step programs.

When her children were young she also helped with their activities such as Girl Scouts, Family Program at Sacred Heart Parish and assisted with fund raising for their organizations.  She also was an active member in Christian Women's Club.

Being a member of community, receiving from community and giving back to community - these are the fundamental values for Dorothy Bohlmann.  Assisting singles in their "moving on in life" struggles, driving visually impaired individuals to complete their errands, caring and sharing with youth as they find themselves in the midst of an alcoholic situation is all part of Bohlmann's giving back to community.  Making A Difference in the lives of many - that is the value shared by Dorothy Bohlmann.
