December 2007 - Felicia Somers
When "Happy Birthday" is sung as the Banquet, Felicia Somers is the Banquet worker selecting and delivering the average of five cakes to each of the smiling recipients. This role is what Somers looks forward to every week when she faithfully joins the Banquet crew.
Somers became acquainted with the Banquet when she would enjoy the meal and friendship of the crew and fellow participants. About eighteen months ago she saw that some people needed assistance with holding their trays while going through the line. After helping people with their trays for some weeks, Jan Case invited Somers to join the Banquet Committee to assist with the Tuesday and Thursday evening servings and especially with presenting the birthday cakes.
The Banquet has grown to serve approximately 200 - 250 on Tuesday evenings and 300+ on Thursday evenings. Volunteering four hours every week at the Banquet is fun for Somers because it gives her the opportunity to greet old friends and to meet many people.
Somers is also a faithful member of the United Church of Christ Youth Bell Choir. She has played bells for over five years - starting when she came to watch her brother ring and help out when they needed another bell ringer. Assisting the Sertoma Club at the Majestic Bluffs Bingo has been another volunteer activity for the past two years. When her brother went with his Big Friend to help the residents for Bingo, Felicia Somers started helping also. She brings smiles and appreciative remarks as she assists the various Bingo players.
Felicia Somers is a 7th grader at Yankton Middle School and making a difference in the lives of hundreds of people every week.
