March 2005 - Helen Patterson

Sharing more than twenty-five hours each week with older adults is what volunteer, Helen Patterson, does Monday through Friday. This dedication to others is the reason for being selected March Volunteer of the Month. When she started 7 1/2 years ago, she had only a couple of older adults to contact each week. Currently she has eight clients that she shares at least two hours per visit.

When Patterson knocks on the door of her clients, she asks them what they want to do. They may need to get groceries, go to a doctor's appointment, wash clothes at the Laundro- mat, get an ice cream cone, do light housekeeping chores, or just sit and visit. One client just asked that she drive him to the fitness center and back.

Senior Companion Program Coordinator, Nancy Iverson, states that Helen is very dependable and attentive towards her clients. She provides friendship and socialization for those who find it difficult to leave their homes. Her friendship has enriched the lives of those she has served.

Adult Services and Aging social worker, Tracey Lehmkuhl, states that her clients are very pleased with Helen and they are very appreciative of her help. Helen is always willing to accept new client assignments if her schedule allows for it. Patterson provides a vital service to the community.

Patterson states, "I love it! I really like that I'm doing something for others." She related that clients ask her if she could stay longer and want to know when she is coming back to see them. She loves to laugh and enjoy a joke with the special clients with whom she shares her time and talents. Because of Helen Patterson's volunteering, her clients are able to live independently at home with personal care. Making a difference in people's lives - that is what Senior Companion Helen Patterson does every day!
