March 2006 - Marianne Morgan
Marianne Morgan, March's United Way & Volunteer Services' Volunteer of the Month, has given of her time in many ways in the Yankton community. She has lived her life in different areas of the country and has been in Yankton for the last 35 years. She has had seven children graduate from Yankton High School with the addition of a daughter with Downs Syndrome who went through junior high in Yankton and then on to Ability Building Services (formerly Yankton Area Adjustment Training Center). She has been involved in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, PTA, and other school activities.
Marianne was active in ARC (The Association for Retarded Citizens) until 1999, which included being involved in the Special Olympics. After ARC's closure in 1999, she was the President of the Ability Building Services, and was asked to help with the starting of a religion program for the handicapped. This program eventually joined with a class at Sacred Heart, and evolved into ERTH (Ecumenical Religious Training for the Handicapped), and various churches sponsor the group for a month at a time.
One of the programs Marianne is currently volunteering for is Meals on Wheels. She visits with residents at Majestic Bluffs Nursing Home and Assisted Living, tries to do as much as she can with her church, Sacred Heart, and continues to help with the handicapped organizations from time to time.
Marianne says she is proud to be part of the Yankton community. She learns so much from the people being served and it is very rewarding for her.
