March 2008 - Matt Michels

Through volunteering while in high school, Matt Michels decided that he would like to pursue a career in the area of health care. That volunteer experience led him to become an EMT, nurse and attorney serving others through health care. Fortunately, his concern to help others embraces more - much more!

During the eighteen years since moving to Yankton, Michels has served in leadership positions at Christ Episcopal Church on the Vestry and Stewardship Committee as well as serving as a Youth Group Leader for fifteen years. He has also been a member of the Chamber of Commerce as well as serving as President of the Chamber in 1997. He also enjoys time spent supporting the Republican Party - especially working with the local Republican youth. Michels is also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

Michels has assisted numerous non-profit groups get organized and established in the community. Some of these organizations include the Heartland Humane Society, Crime Stoppers, Just For Kids, Band Boosters, Mental Wellness Conference, Regional Technical Education Center and Keep Yankton Beautiful.

Serving on numerous boards provides multiple networking opportunities for Michels. He serves on the Board of Directors for Lewis & Clark Behavioral Health, Crime Stoppers, Ability Building Services Foundation and is President of Band Boosters. He is a long time member of the Advisory Board of the South Dakota Human Services Center. Michels also currently chairs the Yankton Housing & Redevelopment Commission.

Serving as a scorekeeper for the Special Olympics Basketball Regional Tournament is very rewarding for Michels are well as his assisting with activities of the High School Debate Team - whether it is working the concession stand or just helping out where needed.

Matt Michels stated that it is his belief that "we are on this earth to serve others. If individuals don't volunteer, people won't get taken care of because government alone can't do it! Government can't hug, cry, give hope - it is the people that work for the good of others that get the job done."

Thank you, Matt Michels for volunteering to help others and get the job done - one person at a time.
