May 2006 - David and Donna Fischer
David and Donna Fischer, retired teachers from the Yankton School System, have kept busy over the years by volunteering in many aspects of the Yankton community. They have been chosen as the United Way of Greater Yankton's May Volunteers of the Month.
Donna, who moved to Yankton in 1970, has served as secretary on the soccer board, vice president of the Library Board, and patient liaison at Avera Sacred Heart Hospital. She has chaired the Banquet committee for the Federated Women's Club. Donna has judged the Stewart School Writing Contest, Press & Dakotan Spelling Bee, and the AARP/YARTA Grandparent Essay Contest.
David moved to Yankton in 1961, and has judged the photography contest at Stewart School. He is currently a volunteer driver for the Habitat for Humanity program in Yankton.
Together, David and Donna have an impressive history of volunteering. They have taught CCD classes at Sacred Heart Church, worked at the Banquet, judged the Optimist Club essay contest, and have assisted in the Avera Sacred Heart Hospital Health Fair. They have both participated in the mock job fair at the Yankton Federal Prison Camp. They have also served as officers for the Yankton Area Retired Teachers Association. Currently, they are both TEAM volunteers for Avera Sacred Heart Hospital.
Donna feels that the satisfaction received from giving something back to the members of a community that has so greatly enriched the lives of her family is the most rewarding aspect of volunteering for her. David says the whole concept of volunteering derives from a desire to return something for all the benefits received from many community sources through the years, and that the reward comes from being able to provide something to fulfill a need that someone else might have.
