November 2004 - Hildegard Bradley
Hildegard Bradley moved back to Yankton six years ago to
be closer to her family and has kept on the move ever since. Age is not an
issue for this volunteer - as a matter of fact, she claims that volunteering
keeps people young! Boredom is not a word in Bradley's vocabulary; therefore
she volunteers. Twice a month she is scheduled to volunteer at the Avera
Sacred Heart Hospital Gift Shop; however, she is frequently called to assist
when they are short-handed. One of the many skills gained was learning to
operate the cash register. An innate skill she shares is giving a little
extra attention to patients. She generously doles out her compassion and
humor in appropriate doses. Hilda also shares her sense of stewardship with
the Hospital Auxiliary.
Three times a month she heads to Avera Sister James Care
Center to play bingo with the residents. A few years ago she invited a
friend to go with her - hence another volunteer has joined the ranks!
Bradley always brings her smile, optimistic attitude and often a joke to
share a laugh and brighten the day.
Bradley answers the call from Sacred Heart Rectory when
there is a mass mailing or information disbursement. She also serves on the
Vocation Committee assisting individuals interested in joining the
priesthood or religious order.
Volunteering runs in Hilda Bradley's family. Her brother,
Leo Weinandt received the March Volunteer of the Month Award and he
introduced her to the volunteer opportunities at the Hospital. Bradley
emphasized the benefits of helping others - learning new skills, meeting new
friends, getting reacquainted with former friends, staying busy, staying
young and last but not least - packing a little something special to share
to make a difference in the lives of many people.
