October 2005 - Judy Lundy

Do you know of anybody who has a hand in everything? Judy Lundy, the United Way & Volunteer Services' October Volunteer of the Month, is one of these people. She has had a generous and giving hand in a variety of places and activities around Yankton County.

Judy started out volunteering for the Boy Scouts during the 1970's. She was the Den Mother (Coach) for twenty-one boys, and was also the first woman Webelos leader.

Before retirement, Judy was the Volunteer Coordinator for the Federal Prison Camp. She taught inmates that were unable to work due to medical reasons how to work a loom to make hats and mittens. These were then given to community agencies that distributed hundreds of hats and mittens to children and adults in need of such attire.

Among the many things she helps out with, Judy is a member of the Tabor Chamber of Commerce and manages the information booth at Czech Days, along with helping the Legion Auxiliary with kolache sales, serving and cleaning up. She also assists with monthly bingo when they are short of help. Judy has also been a member of the Tabor Development Corporation for many years, a member of Bon Homme Recycling when it was in operation, and helps the Altar and Rosary Society with their Fall Bazaar. She is also a charter member of the Yankton Humane Society and was an EMT for two years when they were in critical need of assistance.

Judy has volunteered at the Yankton Care Center serving lunches, taking plants for their plant sale, and leading crafts with the residents. She gives rides to the Tabor Senior Citizen's Center for meals, accommodating three to five people five days a week. She also helps clean up after the meals and decorates for all of the seasons.

Judy helps her neighbor for transportation to doctor's appointments and tending household chores during hospitalization. She also helps other neighbors by picking up groceries, prescriptions, and helping out with yard and paperwork.

Judy also volunteers by teaching adolescents at the Human Services Center to work with wood cut-outs. She finds this to be very rewarding and the twelve to eighteen year olds' she visits really appreciate the time she spends with them. Judy also helps out at the HSC Clothing Closet every Friday afternoon. According to fellow co-workers, "Judy graciously gives of her time... and talent to make the lives of the adolescents on Oak 2 at the South Dakota Human Services Center a little brighter. For many of these kids, Judy is like a friend or relative visiting. She takes special care to get to know the kids on an individual basis and she goes out of her way to find projects for them to do that reflect their individual interests."

With so much to do, Judy Lundy is a very busy woman, but finds that she gets so much in return by helping out her community.
