September 2004 - Frank Carter
Frank Carter's schedule is never the same since he started
volunteering at the Senior Citizens Center. The Center utilizes inmate
volunteers on a daily basis; however they require transportation - Frank
takes care of that - driving them to the Center in the morning and returning
them to the Trustee Unit in the afternoon. Carter picks up supplies and runs
errands whenever needed. A "can't miss" daily run is to pick up the boxes of
donated rolls from Hy Vee Foods. Once a month the Center receives
commodities that get delivered throughout the community. Frank takes care of
one of the routes of 25 boxes.
The Center needs daily checks on its refrigeration and
furnace function. Carter makes the rounds especially on weekends to insure
everything is in running order. He also assists the custodians when special
events and noon meals require additional room arranging. In a leadership
role, Frank meets once a month with the other Board of Directors guiding the
future of the Center.
Trinity Lutheran Church also benefits from Carter's
expertise and energy. He served many years on the Trustee Board as well as
other committees. He is only a phone call away if the custodial staff needs
extra help.
For 23 years, Carter was a volunteer fire fighter. Not
only do they answer fire calls, the firemen are required to take many hours
of education classes - an additional sacrifice for them and their families.
Because of the "retire at 60" policy, Frank reflects fondly on that
volunteer opportunity.
Frank Carter has shared his time, talents and treasures
with this community for many years. He was an employee of the City for 31
years and drove a public school bus for 23 years. He has touched the lives
of countless people - both young and old. He stated, "Volunteering is a
two-way experience. I am able to help and have two good legs."
