September 2006 - Lorenz Fox
Lorenz Fox is the United Way & Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton's Volunteer of the Month for September. Fox served in the WWII Occupation of Japan. He graduated from South Dakota State University and was employed by the U.S. Soil Conservation Service as well as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In his 23 years with the Corps, he was involved in Recreation and Park Development and held the titles of Park Manager and Chief of Natural Resources. It was a very rewarding career for him and he was able to associate and work with many great fellow workers, young people, and visitors.
During his years of volunteerism, he has been active in Cub Scouting and Lions Club. He has served on the United Way Board as well as on committees for troubled youth. Fox has been a Community Worker for Lewis and Clark Mental Health and has helped with packaging and delivery of Christmas food and gifts for the Contact Center. He has been a member of Avera Sacred Heart Hospital's TEAM since 1989. He has been involved with the Knights of Columbus since 1962, helping with charity programs and special events. He has taken part in basketball and baseball youth programs. He and his wife, Fran, have also held the title of Captain and Belle for Yankton's Riverboat Days and are still involved with the activities of the yearly event.
Lorenz Fox has been and is currently involved in many church activities. He is a Lector and Eucharistic Minister as well as chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee for St. Benedict's. He is chairman of the Sacred Heart Cemetery Board. He serves as Lector on alternate Fridays at Avera Majestic Bluffs Nursing Home's morning masses.
For Lorenz Fox, the most rewarding aspect of volunteering is being able to help others. He enjoys giving back to the community, it makes him feel good, and he has fun doing it! Fox also says, "Retirement has given me the opportunity to do what I always hoped for, that is being able to go to daily mass and do volunteer work for my family, friends, church and community."
