United Way of Greater Yankton fights for the education, financial stability, and health of every person in our community. With more than 23 funded partner agencies in our community and 14 programs managed by our staff, the work of United Way improves lives in the Yankton area every day.  


The Executive Director is the key management leader of the United Way of Greater Yankton, establishing a vision for Community Impact that is achieved through the efforts of a diverse team of high-performing leaders, staff, and volunteers alike.


The Executive Director is the Chief Mobilizer; s/he leverages the power of relationships and networks, and works across private, public, and corporate sectors to improve conditions of the community. The Executive Director possesses a high level of broad business and management skills and is effective at generating resources and financial support for the organization.


The Executive Director is dedicated to shared and measurable goals for the common good – creating, resourcing, scaling, and leveraging strategies for broad investment and impact.


The Executive Director is the steward of the brand and understands his/her role in growing and protecting the reputation of United Way. S/he is responsible for building trust in United Way and its relevance in the community. S/he values network and strives to leverage United Way’s breadth of community presence, relationships, and strategy.

Summary of Position:

Responsible for the organization’s overall management, understands and is committed to carrying out the mission, provide fundraising leadership and support, and serve as the agency’s key representative for community functions and in building relationships with persons at all levels of the public, private and voluntary sectors.




Bachelor’s degree in nonprofit management, business or related field, or commensurate experience in non-profit management, is required.  Graduate degree preferred.



Four years of supervisory or managerial experience in a non-profit organization is preferred.

Prior nonprofit and development/fundraising experience with proven results

Past success working with a board of directors

Knowledge of people, culture, issues and relationships in the greater Yankton area and South Dakota

Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office / Quickbooks / eCimpact
