2025 July Volunteer of the Month - Steph Serck

ree

Offering free clothing to those in need through community donations is not as simple as it seems. It takes a cadre of volunteers to sort, hang, organize and distribute these clothes.  This month, one volunteer stands out!

Steph Serck is an incredible asset to The Clothing Closet. She is deeply passionate about ensuring individuals and families in our community have access to high-quality clothing. Her attention to detail helps make the shopping experience dignified and easy for those visiting during appointments.

Steph’s dedication shines through in all she does, especially in the behind-the-scenes work that keeps The Clothing Closet running smoothly.  From organizing storage areas, to making sure the distribution floor is fully stocked and welcoming; Stephanie brings care and precision to every task.

Steph played an integral role during the recent move of The Clothing Closet, volunteering countless hours to get the new storage space up and running. She consistently goes above and beyond, offering thoughtful ideas to improve operations while remaining open to new suggestions. Her commitment, reliability, and heart for service make her an essential part of The Clothing Closet team.

Steph inspires others through her quiet leadership and unwavering commitment. She leads by example; showing that even the smallest tasks, when done with care, can have a big impact. Her positive attitude and willingness to pitch in wherever needed encourages others to do the same.

Because of her commitment to serving our neighbors in need, United Way & Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton was honored to present Stephanie Serck with the July 2025 Volunteer of the Month Award.

We asked Steph to share more about her volunteerism, in her own words:

I have lived in Yankton since 2007.

I started volunteering as a kid, more since moving to Yankton.

I volunteer at Parents for a Safe Prom, YHS Booster Club, RCDVC Board, the Clothing Closet (organizing, sorting, stocking, etc.); Trinity Lutheran Church (Sunday School music, youth group leader); United Way of Greater Yankton (Adopt-a-Family Christmas program).

Approximate hours that I volunteer: I don’t keep track, but I keep myself busy and enjoy helping out!

Volunteer work is enjoyable because these programs make such a big impact on the community. Volunteers are needed to make them successful, and I am happy to help!

My best volunteer experience is: I don’t have a favorite, but I will say it’s fun volunteering with friends and seeing the evolution of the Clothing Closet has been rewarding.

The advice I would give to those thinking about getting out there and volunteering in their communities is: There are so many opportunities and ways to volunteer!  Find a cause you are excited about and try it!  We all have the power to make a difference!

Thank you, Steph, for all you do!
