Nick Severson is a driving force behind the Yankton community. He generously gives his time, talents, and wide-ranging passions to causes that make a real difference. Whether stepping up to volunteer, serving on a board, or helping lead a special committee, Nick is often behind the scenes making things happen. His leadership and dedication play a vital role in strengthening Yankton, and our community is better because of his commitment to serve.
Because of his commitment to making Yankton a better place to be, United Way & Volunteer Services of Greater Yankton was honored to present Nick Severson with the November 2025 Volunteer of the Month Award.
We asked Nick to share more about his volunteerism, in his own words:
I have lived in Yankton since 2021. Originally from Vermillion and my wife is from Norfolk, so we made Yankton our home and love the city!
I have been volunteering throughout my life but really dove in starting in 2022.
I volunteer at Harvest Halloween Board Member, Friends of the Library Membership Chair, The Center, Bridging Yankton Committee, Restore Church, Avera Sacred Heart Hospital, Yankton Housing and Redevelopment Board Member, Big Friend, Little Friend. I have also volunteered for several others in the past.
Volunteer work is enjoyable because I am grateful for the opportunity and ability to help others, whether it is lightening their load or lifting them up.
My best volunteer experience is being sober for 11 years, I used to be very active in the recovery community and always get great joy from trying to help others with addictions. I also really enjoy helping organize Harvest Halloween and the Bridging Yankton walk, knowing how much the community enjoys those events.
The advice I would give to those thinking about volunteering is that anyone can make a difference. Life is busy and stressful, but if we can make even a little time to help others, we are all better off. “Many hands make light work.”
Thank you, Nick, for all you do! To learn more about local volunteer opportunities or to nominate someone for United Way’s Volunteer of the Month Award, please visit www.yanktonunitedway.org/volunteer, email info@yanktonunitedway.org, or call United Way of Greater Yankton at (605) 665-6766.
