March 2021 Volunteer of the Month - Mary Pesek

Updated: Jul 2, 2021

Habitat for Humanity Clay & Yankton Counties ReStore is a local nonprofit retail establishment specializing in the resale of quality new and gently used furniture, antiques, appliances, and building materials. The Habitat ReStore diverts tons of reusable materials from our local landfills each year by taking in household goods and furniture donations. All items donated are sold to the public at a discount, with proceeds used to fund the building of affordable housing in both Clay and Yankton Counties.

Essential to the success of the Habitat ReStore is the dedication of volunteers. According to Executive Director Rebecca Meier, “Volunteers are the heart and soul of our mission at Habitat. Many tasks that are needed for our programs to function are completed by hard working volunteers.”

Mary Pesek has been a long-time volunteer for Habitat for Humanity Clay & Yankton Counties and in appreciation of her efforts, was recently presented with United Way of Greater Yankton’s March Volunteer of the Month Award.

According to Meier, “For years, Mary has donated her time and talents to ensure the Habitat ReStore is clean and organized. We are so appreciative of her talents and the time she dedicates to our mission.”

We asked Mary to share more about her extraordinary volunteer efforts.

I have lived in the Yankton area since 1970 and began volunteering because I love people and feel I receive much more than what time I spend volunteering.

I continue volunteering because I am very grateful and blessed to be able to help.

I volunteer for Pathways Shelter for Homeless, Beadle Elementary School, Sacred Heart Church, and Habitat for Humanity of Clay & Yankton Counties.

Volunteer work is enjoyable because I am able to meet so many wonderful people.

The advice I would give to those thinking about getting out there and volunteering in their communities is: Do it!!!
